Sunday Sketches - Ode to Klimt's 'The Kiss' Complete!

Update:  Here is the professional scan which should allow you to zoom in on the detail a little more...
Enjoy!

Happy Sunday Morning Everyone!

I worked several long hours on this piece and it is finally finished!  Yeah!
It's often difficult for me to know when to stop embellishing...I could keep adding details forever I think! :-)

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.  I definitely learned A LOT with this piece and I'm really getting comfortable with etching the paper to bring out details, something I have not seen a lot of people do - it's fun to be using a technique that not a lot of people use, since I really have to push
myself to develope my own style.

I have to give a shout out to Rebecca over at Penny Lane Ink for some inspiration with patterning and the medalion on his chest in this piece.  I never leave without being inspired when I visit Rebecca's place!  If you haven't visited her, please take the time and treat yourself!

Hope you are all having a relaxing Sunday, and get the chance to visit all of the wonderful artists that participate in the Sunday Sketches group over at dear Sophia's place!

Big Smiles

Julia

This is beautiful, Julia. I had to smile and chuckle at your little statement of not knowing when to stop embellishing things. hee hee I do that at times myself. Anyway, very nice work and inspiring how much time and effort you put into your artwork.

Happy SS! :)

This is so beautiful. What exactly do you mean by the etching?

You get better and better with every piece you know.

This turned out beautiful! I cannot commit myself long enough to make a piece like this, I'm so impatient I go with the flow & have it over and done with in 10 mins which does not yield great results but looking at this beautiful result is giving me cause to think of spending more time on a piece. Thanks so much for sharing (and stopping by my blog to say hi) much love Jennibellie x

Lisa - I use a metal stylus type tool with a ball on either end to etch details into the paper and then apply multiple layers of color over it to bring the details out. The details are left white, or maybe another color if I apply a light color first and then etch that, applying a darker color over the first one.

It's fun and not something I've seen before so it's nice to be doing something unique.

It's incredibly beautiful Julia!!

Sounds like an interesting but very time-consuming technique - what wonderful patience you have!

Thanks everyone! Yes it is time-consuming - each piece I do takes somewhere between 20-40 hours depending on the size. Whew!
With my busy life, it can take me a while to find the time to work on each piece.

WOW!!! It is lovely. I just love to look at the details in your work. When I first looked at the sketch a while back I did not fully appreciate the body positions and WOW - it is really fantastic.
